Spring, a sale, and a signing! - September Newsletter

Hey Subscribers!

We’ve just arrived in September, which means Auckland has finally left winter and officially entered spring. It also means it’s time for Anec-dote’s (new) monthly newsletter, highlighting what’s up and on sale in store. If a month is just too long to wait, you can also keep up to date with us on Instagram and Facebook.

Father’s Day Sale

This week from Wednesday to Saturday we’re holding an in-store Father’s Day sale, offering 15% off all second-hand books!* Whether it’s transportation, exploration, geography, fiction, history, mystery, or anything and everything New Zealand, if you’re looking for something for that one and only aficionado father in your life (or yourself), pop in for a browse this week.

*(Sale does not include ephemera, new books, or rare/gallery books)

A Journey With Leadership by Leigh Auton

We’ll be hosting a book signing for local government and governance legend Leigh Auton on Saturday the 19th from 12:30-2pm. Auton’s autobiography, A Journey With Leadership: The Life of a Boy from the Hokianga is on sale at Anec-dote from Thursday this week. In A Journey With Leadership, Auton reflects on his long career in the public and private sectors, including over 30 years in Auckland local government and his impact on the city, serving under figures like Sir Barry Curtis and Len Brown, and his time as the former CEO of Manukau City Council and president of the New Zealand Planning Institute. Come into Anecdote on the 19th to hear Auton and get your copy signed.

Gallery News

We’ve also had some updates in our gallery space. We have a few works of Nina Julyan in store for only another few weeks, while Justine Hawksworth has brought in more prints. If you’re looking to hire Anec-dote for an event or have your work displayed, feel free to reach out.

In stock

We’ve also been deep diving through some incredible collections that have been brought in recently for appraisal and are now making their way onto our shelves. If you have something you want us to have a look at, feel free to reach out through our website or pop into the store. Some of these include:

-          Famous Māori Songs – A scarce song and picture booklet of classic waiata (including Pokarekare Ana and Ka Mate), produced by New Zealand instrument company Chas. Begg and Co in 1926.

-          1920s Philips’ Travelling Map of Persia – A scarce collector’s item, this beautiful foldout map of Persia (modern-day Iran) and its surrounding countries is now available in store and online.

-          The Service Station and Motor Mechanics' Manual, 1940 – Formerly owned by a Far North bulldozer contractor over the 1940s and 50s, we’re very privileged to be finding a new home for this 1282-page tome of motoring and mechanical knowledge. Perfect for a fanatic over all things automotive.

-          Coverups & Copouts by Tom Lewis – As notorious as it is rare (and subject to rumours that New Zealand Police have been buying up copies to destroy them), we’re happy to announce we now have a copy available in store for $250. Come and get it before it’s gone.

-          1966 Auckland Airport Opening Ceremony Programme – A rare and collectible pamphlet for aviation fanatics, this 72-page programme was produced for the 1966 opening of the Auckland International Airport.

Some of our own stock highlights include:

-          On Sunday next week, the (very) long-awaited City Rail Link will finally open to passengers nine years after construction started back in 2018. If you’re looking to catch up on your New Zealand transport history before the opening, we’ve got you covered. Some picks from our shelves:

o   From Survival to Revival: Auckland’s Public Transport since 1860

o   150 Years of Rail in New Zealand

o   Iconic Transit Maps

o   Rails Through The Clay: A History of London’s Tube Railways

-          Last month in 1914, New Zealand officially entered the “Great War”, with almost 100,000 New Zealanders serving between 1914 and 1918. Some picks from our shelves:

o   Dark Journey - Three key New Zealand battles of the Western Front by Glyn Harper

o   Echoes of Gallipoli by Terry Kinloch

o   World Aircraft Origins – World War 1

o   By Wires to Victory by Roy F. Ellis

-          NAC & NZR Posters – We have a collection of beautiful 1970s travel posters from the New Zealand National Airways Corporation (before its amalgamation with Air NZ in 1978) and New Zealand Railways, available in store and online.

-          Press Pass by Geoff Dale – Responsible for iconic shots over New Zealand’s late 20th c., including the “Fish and Chip Brigade” and the Rainbow Warrior diver, New Zealand Herald photographer Geoff Dale compiles his career highlights and takes you behind each snapshot in Press Pass, now in store.

-          Beautiful New Zealand – A stunning vintage tourist booklet from 1920, featuring incredible early 20th c. colour photographs of Aotearoa’s landscape.

We’ve of course got much more stock online and in store, so either check out our website or pop into our store in Mt Eden! We’ll be back with another newsletter in October.

Kindest regards,

The Team at Anec-dote
