A haven for books, art and objects that help bring stories to life.

At anec•dote, every object holds a story, and every story connects us to our shared heritage. We’re curators of tales, weaving together New Zealand and Pacifica's rich history, culture, and landscape through thoughtfully chosen books, ephemera, art and objects, both new and old.
Our mission is to preserve and celebrate these narratives, offering a unique space where the past meets the present in ways that inspire curiosity and connection. From rare books to unique artifacts, each piece in our collection invites you to explore, reflect, and uncover the timeless stories of Aotearoa and beyond.

Don Lyon

Don Lyon brings to anec•dote a lifelong love of storytelling, history, and the treasures that connect us to our heritage.
As a kid, Don spent countless hours exploring the gumfields of the Waitākere foothills, unearthing remnants of life and building his very own ‘museum.’ His visitors, mostly his tolerant parents and bemused siblings, paid a modest 20-cent entry fee to view his 'discoveries'. Though his pedal-powered planetarium was less of a triumph, these early adventures laid the foundation for a career and personal journey steeped in curiosity and connection.
Don’s professional life as an urban and environmental planner has spanned over 35 years across Aotearoa New Zealand, the Pacific, Australia, and Asia. His work has deepened his appreciation for our unique natural and cultural heritage, the diversity of our people, and the hidden treasures waiting to be uncovered in books, artifacts, maps, and art. Don has a talent for spotting the unusual and meaningful, with a passion for foraging through forgotten sheds, attics, and collections to unearth stories and objects worth preserving.
At the heart of anec•dote is Don’s vision: to connect people with history through objects, books, and stories. Whether he’s helping someone uncover the value of an inherited heirloom, curating unique collections for the shop, or sharing a well-loved tale, Don is dedicated to honoring our taonga (treasures) and placing them in the hands of those who cherish them. His approach is rooted in integrity, discovery, and a deep respect for the stories that shape us and the heritage we share.
