Leigh Auton is a former NZPI President and CEO of Manukau City Council, he’s held senior governance roles across the public and private sectors and continues to mentor Emerging Leaders in planning. Leigh shares his experiences in his new book, A Journey with Leadership.
Describing himself as a boy from the Hokianga, Leigh’s autobiography traverses his planning career, which saw him serve political figures that have shaped New Zealand’s biggest city. Over 32 years he worked under Sir Lloyd Elsmore, Sir Barry Curtis and Len Brown. He paints a picture of a conservative but carefree rural childhood, his whakapapa on both the Māori and English branches of his family, and how his early experiences shaped him into a modern and decisive leader. Often called in to fix complex challenges during his time at Manukau, Leigh describes how he later transferred those skills into governance roles, committing his time and talents to numerous charitable endeavours.
This is a wonderful tale of one of New Zealand’s most prominent planners, sharing his journey with leadership.
Published 2026, paperback, colour and b&w illustrations through out. 144pp.
