The book details the experiences of Danish, Norwegian, and Swedish immigrants who arrived in New Zealand under the public works and immigration policy of the 1870s. These settlers were granted land in dense, isolated bush areas, specifically the "Forty Mile Bush" (which included the Wairarapa, Mauriceville, Norsewood, and Dannevirke districts) and the Manawatū region.
