Bill Tilman, DSO and a winner of the Royal Geographical Society Founders Medal; was a tough buggar by any measure!
He was a veteran of both the Somme and later in WWII at Dunkirk, Africa and the Middle East campaigns. He believed in a small compact climbing parties with minimalist equipment.
So this is the whole story of the fifth Everest expedition, led by Tilman, without oxygen, in 1938, his party ultimately reaching an phenomenal 27,200 feet on the world's unconquered peak, before an early monsoon defeated them.
