Now this is a bit left field from my normal geographic focus, but when I found it I just had to have it and I know a keen collector will cherish it too!
It is a must-have addition for any cartographic collection.
This folded tourist information 'pocket' map and travel guide dates from 1956. You will need a very large pocket!
On one side it presents the most incredibly detailed hand coloured perspective of every building, canal, landmark and visitor attraction in the centre of Amsterdam, with the verso being a detailed map of the unique network of canals, roads, rail stations, parks and the port.
Produced by Hermann Bollmann, a German cartographer who brought his training as a graphic artist to bear on the German tradition of Vogelschaukarten (bird's-eye-view maps), it is an amazing relic of beautiful cartography rarely found today.
The map and guide folds into a beautiful booklet, but expands to its full beauty to measure 840mm by 680mm.
As a rare piece, nearly 70 years old, it is in Very Good overall condition, minor scuffs and folds, very minor crease tears, but it will hang beautifully in a frame.
You will see repros and prints of this map but this is the genuine original, no doubt carried by an excited tourist of the day.
Unframed $440
