James K Baxter was a controversial NZ poetic icon and pre-eminent writer of his day. A conscientious objector in WWI, amongst other achievements he was a champion for preserving Maori culture and he established a commune at Jerusalem on the Wanganui River. Unfortunately alcohol took its toll on his life and he died too early at the age of only 46. He was buried at Jerusalem on Māori land in front of "the Top House" where he had lived, in a ceremony combining Māori and Catholic traditions.
This is an interesting selection of Baxter's unpublished poems from 1945 to 1972.
Author: James K Baxter, 1976, publisher: Oxford University Press.
First Edition, Pre Owned. VG+, Dust jacket slightly faded
